Test preparation should answer one question:
“Can you drive safely and independently without needing your instructor to rescue the plan?”
The goal is not to memorise a route — GOV.UK states that driving-test routes are not published. A good preparation session identifies the skills that still break down under pressure and gives you focused practice before test day.

The normal driving portion is around 35 minutes. Taking a wrong turn is not automatically a driving fault if you continue safely.

A mock test creates a period where the instructor gives fewer coaching prompts and records faults in a test-like format. The purpose is diagnostic: to find out what happens when you are expected to make the decisions yourself.
A mock-test “pass” is not a guarantee of the real result.
Current GOV.UK guidance says that you must book your own car driving test. Before booking:

Should I book my test before I am ready?
GOV.UK recommends discussing readiness with your instructor and choosing a date you realistically expect to be ready by.
Will I fail if I take a wrong turn in independent driving?
GOV.UK says you will not receive a fault simply for taking a wrong turning. Continue safely and follow the examiner’s help back to the route.
How many driving faults can I make?
Under current GOV.UK rules, a pass requires no more than 15 driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.
