Your first driving lesson is not an exam.
It is the beginning of a process: becoming familiar with the car, learning safe routines and gradually taking on more responsibility as your skill develops. LPD’s beginner lessons are for people with little or no previous driving experience who want to learn in an automatic car.
Step 1
You need a valid provisional driving licence before taking lessons. Before the appointment:

The exact first lesson depends on you and a safe training location. A complete beginner may be introduced to:
You may not cover every item in one session. Progress matters more than rushing through a checklist.
Step 3
As your control and observations improve, lessons gradually introduce more complex situations.
Your instructor should explain why a skill matters, demonstrate where useful, let you practise and give clear feedback.

Practical-test skills
You do not have to pass the theory test before starting practical lessons. However, learning the Highway Code, road signs and hazard perception alongside your lessons can make road situations easier to understand.
To book the ordinary practical car test, you must first pass the theory test.

I have never sat in the driver’s seat. Is that a problem?
No. A beginner lesson can start from the basics.
Will I go onto busy roads in my first lesson?
Your instructor will choose a learning environment appropriate to your current ability and safety, rather than promising a specific route before assessing you.
What if I make a mistake?
Mistakes are part of learning. The useful question is what caused the mistake and what action will make the next attempt safer.
Should I book a block immediately?
That depends on LPD’s pricing and your preference. See the Prices page and read the prepaid-hours and cancellation terms before paying for a large block.
