The way car driving tests are booked in Great Britain changed in 2026. Many driving-school websites still describe the old system, where your instructor could book or move your test for you. That is no longer allowed. Here is what changed, when, and what it means for you as a learner.
The four big changes at a glance
- From 31 March 2026: you can only make 2 changes to a booked test (previously up to 6).
- From 12 May 2026: only the learner can book, change, cancel or swap their test — instructors can no longer do it for you.
- From 12 May 2026: using unofficial booking or “cancellation-finder” services is prohibited.
- From 9 June 2026: if you move your test, you can only move it to one of the 3 test centres nearest to where it is booked (or back to the original centre).
GOV.UK puts it plainly: “Only you are allowed to change, cancel or swap your own driving test.”
What this means in practice
You book your own test
Book through the official GOV.UK service. When booking, GOV.UK recommends using your driving instructor’s reference number so you pick a slot when your instructor (and their car) is available.
Only 2 changes
If you need more than two changes, you have to cancel and book a new test. So choose your date carefully — ideally after agreeing with your instructor when you are realistically likely to be ready.
Moving test centres is limited
You can no longer move a test to any centre in the country to find an earlier date. Pick the centre you genuinely intend to use. For Southampton learners, GOV.UK’s test-centre guidance lists Southampton (Maybush).
No “cancellation list”
Earlier slots can appear when other learners cancel or when DVSA adds availability, but there is no official cancellation list — and paying third-party apps to grab slots is now against the rules.
A simple booking checklist
- Pass your theory test (you must pass it before booking the practical).
- Agree a realistic target date with your instructor.
- Get your instructor’s reference number.
- Book on GOV.UK yourself, choosing the centre you will actually use.
- Keep your 2 changes for genuine emergencies.
How this affects intensive courses
If you are planning an intensive driving course around a test date, you will need to book the test yourself and make sure your theory is passed first. Your instructor can advise on timing, but cannot book it for you.
