Can a learner driver go on a motorway? For years the answer in Britain was simply “no”. Since 2018 that has changed — but only under specific conditions that many learners (and some parents) still get wrong. Here is the current position in plain English.
The short answer
Yes — a learner car driver in England, Scotland or Wales can drive on a motorway, but only when:
- they are accompanied by an approved driving instructor (ADI), and
- the car is fitted with dual controls.
Motorway lessons are voluntary, and it is the instructor who decides when a learner is ready.
What learners cannot do
- Drive on a motorway with a parent, friend or other supervising driver — even if they are experienced.
- Drive on a motorway in a car without dual controls.
- Expect motorway driving on the practical test — the car test does not include motorways.
Why take a motorway lesson before passing?
Once you pass, you can legally drive straight onto a motorway on your own. A lesson beforehand means your first experience of joining at speed, choosing lanes and leaving safely happens with a professional beside you — rather than on your first solo journey.

Are you ready for a motorway lesson?
Instructors usually look for confident control at higher speeds, consistent observations and good planning on dual carriageways first. If you are not yet comfortable on faster A-roads, work on those before the motorway.
